Do you agree with Bob Dylan on who the greatest rock and roll band of all time is?

"The Rolling Stones are truly the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world and always will be. The last, too. Everything that came after them -- metal, rap, punk, new wave, pop-rock, you name it .... You can trace it all back to the Rolling Stones. They were the first and the last and no one's ever done it better."

-Bob DylanDo you agree with Bob Dylan on who the greatest rock and roll band of all time is?
He's right. It's not their music he's talking about, it's their style and attitude. Their longevity has nothing to do with it - other bands have wanted to be the Stones ever since way back - at least since 1968 onwards.

Every major rock band since the Stones has modelled themselves on them. The Stones took their influences from the Blues, so they were never as original or creative as, say, the Beatles, but they made their own template for how a rock band are expected to look and behave, and that has lasted ever since.

The Stones pretty much invented rock %26amp; roll excess on their own. Think about all the bands who just wouldn't have had a clue without the Stones: Aerosmith, Guns %26amp; Roses, Motley Crue, The Black Crows, the list is endless. Even their contempories envied them - the Who changed their stage act specifically after Pete Townsend and John Entwhistle saw the Stones live.

There isn't a single rock guitarist who doesn't worship Keith Richards - not necessarily for his playing ability , but because he has always been SO damned cool, and he's still alive and healthy after everything he's done.
I love The Stones, but I find a problem with their longevity. On one hand, it's remarkable that they've lasted this long (hell, it's remarkable the core of the band is still alive). On the other hand, they've had time to release a lot of substandard material. But no one can deny the greatness of their classic albums. They're the greatest rock band of all time based on the legends about them alone.Do you agree with Bob Dylan on who the greatest rock and roll band of all time is?
I hate the term "Genre" with a passion, but I always thought of the early Stones as more of a R%26amp;B Band. However, they are the closest to a R'n'R Group in my "Top 10 List", and if Dylan says it, then he has to have his views given the utmost respect.

Kelly makes a very valid point which I would find very hard to argue against.
honestly, i doubt dylan believes that. i think he just has a radio show and so he talks a lot about music on it, the line between criticism and hyperbole for fun is often blurred. nothing against the rolling stones mind you, amazing band, amazing longevity, several albums i'd call favorites, just trying to clarify what i assume is the context of an out of context quote.Do you agree with Bob Dylan on who the greatest rock and roll band of all time is?
Greatest is a matter of opinion. The rolling stones are good, and have some classic albums. They have also lasted a long time. But i dont think there longevity should make them the greatest band. In my opinion to i would have to go with the who. they really brought the attitude with them.
really?

wow.

Cuz you see, I find the Rolling Stones to be very uninspired and boring, so I kinda don't get how they influenced everything that came after them, but then I don't claim some mystic cosmic connection to all music like I'm sure all the years of Drugs have given Bob.
i find that kinda funny since the stones can be traced right to chuck berry, many of kieth's guitar lines were lifted and are an exact copy of chuck berry riffs. the guitar at the end of brown sugar comes to mind first.
They are one of the best certainly but The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Black Sabbath and any number of other bands can make the same claim. Me I go with Led Zeppelin but that is just personal choice.
This is a tough one, I mean I love The Rolling Stones but I'm not sure if I would consider them the greatest. It's all a matter of opinion I guess, I'm not sure if I would rank them #1 but they are totally top 3.
No. Thats his opinion but it does not make it fact. I think hes over exaggerating too ... i dont think the rolling stones can be traced to rap or metal or punk.

Just what i think ..
Rap can be traced back to the Rolling Stones? That's a stretch, I don't hear it myself.
Well...all due respect to Mr. Zimmerman, I'd have to say that honor belongs to The Who, although the Stones are damned close.

Just my opinion.
That would be Led Zeppelin, the the Stones

The Stones PWN The Who btw
Not my cup of tea...
