Rock %26amp; Roll is just a musical style, the songs can have all sorts of messages. Some are positive, some are negative, and some are neutral. If you listen to nothing but negative messages all day long, I guarantee it will have some effect on you, just like listening to positive uplifting messages will. I guess it's up to you which way you'd like to be affected.

I don't think it has ever been banned as a whole. There are several incidents where songs have been banned from the radio, lyrics changed, album art changed, and things like that. There is a really good history I found here.

Well it is simple. First of all, all of it is ofcourse music from a literal standpoint. Rap is driven by rhythm and rhythm is one of the three theoretical aspects of music. Rock on the other hand is driven by melody. Yet the melodies are extremely simple and primitive. Compare a rock "ballad" to a Bach Sonata, partita or cantata and you will see that it is simply the same simple tune being recited over and over again (usually quite loudly). If I am going to listen to melodically based music I will listen to REAL melodically based music (by the way, try the Italian baroque composer Albinoni, he is extremely underrated). On the other hand, the best rap music (not the commercial stuff) takes complex and and innovative lyrics and using a compelling musical enviornment creates an extremely interesting and original effect. Rock and metal however seem to exist as simply deteriorated versions of far superior melodically based genres of music.Do you know why good rap music is superior to rock and roll and metal?
Ok listen guy I am a Hip Hop head myself and if you are music then you love it all. Early years of Hip Hop were Rock n Roll Beastie Boys, Run DMC. Listen guy Chuck Berry and Little Richard are true Rock n' Roll. I used to be like you but you but can't subject yourself to one genre of music and then dis other music. If you do you are just like them who complain about hip hop saying that any one can make the beats but dont know the complexity of a beat machine. Dont be like them

I would have to disagree. Modern day rap originated from a guy by the name of Herc. All he did was buy two records and learn to turn table them and break down the sounds then reconstruct the sounds into a slightly motified beat. No music was composed or written. Songs with lyrics and Classical Compositions are two different things. A guy by the name of Bambaataa sometimes mixed sounds from rock-music recordings and television shows into the standard funk and disco fare that Herc and most of his followers relied upon. By using rock records, Bambaataa extended rap beyond the immediate reference points of contemporary black youth culture. By the 1990s any sound source was considered fair game and rap artists borrowed sounds from such disparate sources as Israeli folk music, bebop jazz records, and television news broadcasts. In 1976 Grandmaster Flash introduced the technique In 1979 the first two rap records appeared: "King Tim III (Personality Jock)," recorded by the Fatback Band, and "Rapper's Delight," by Sugarhill Gang.
Sampling brought into question the ownership of sound. Some artists claimed that by sampling recordings of a prominent black artist, such as funk musician James Brown, they were challenging white corporate America and the recording industry's right to own black cultural expression. Even though I do like some rap music, especially old school rap (e.g. Ice-T), I would have to disagree. Compared to some of the rap music there is today, rock has a lot more melody, talent, and credibility since there are real people playing real instruments and someone with a real voice! The ballads are merit talent too. There are some rock acts, however, where it's all this screaming throughout the song. I don't care for too much of that.

He's right. It's not their music he's talking about, it's their style and attitude. Their longevity has nothing to do with it - other bands have wanted to be the Stones ever since way back - at least since 1968 onwards.

I hate the term "Genre" with a passion, but I always thought of the early Stones as more of a R%26amp;B Band. However, they are the closest to a R'n'R Group in my "Top 10 List", and if Dylan says it, then he has to have his views given the utmost respect.

i find that kinda funny since the stones can be traced right to chuck berry, many of kieth's guitar lines were lifted and are an exact copy of chuck berry riffs. the guitar at the end of brown sugar comes to mind first.

Rock and Roll Room Re-design help!?
Okay. Well, I have a small bedroom. It has 3 windows and a closet. So here is where I need help. I want to re-design my room to make it rock and roll themed, but I don't know how I should paint the walls and set up the furniture. I can get the measurements if you need them. I want to have drum and guitar themed stuff if that makes sence. I need help with this because I need a room that I won't get sick of after 2 months. Please help! Something I did in my room when I was 18, was get simple furniture (desk or small table) Then I found pictures I liked and printed them in black and white. Then I decopauged the table with those pictures. It looked very cool.
Sounds cool. I would do a wall in black and the others in bright colors or white. I was going to suggest buying some blank cds and sticking them on your wall or ceiling. I was also thinking checkered curtains (black and white maybe) Find someone who can draw music notes or find them on the internet and put them somewhere. If you want cheap furniture, go to a lowes or home depot and find the marked down stuff. You can get lots of things for little or nothing. Buy some drumsticks and glue them to your dresser drawers. If you have lamps in your room, try gluing guitar picks to the shade. Some ideas. Hope it helped.

I quite like the way it is now.. Besides the fact that bands like MCR and Panic domeinate this industry. I like how rock is the underdog music genre.
I like it that the cool kids dont like it.. I like being different and differing from the cool kids... and rock allows me that.
Rock (not any of this garage-rock-pop crap or fake-punk-rock) was over-exhausted in the 80s with stadium rock bands like scorpions. The public may not want any REAL rock bands, and unfortunately will be all too interested with these fake, commercial rock bands like the Foo Fighters to make any real stuff for the next 10 years.
The best way to save Rock n Roll is too stop watching reality TV like American Idol. Another is for the public to actually go to a retailer to purchase music. Downloading is killing the music industry because the larger labels are no longer investing in young bands or artists and providing them with a chance to grow, develop, or be heard. The way things are now only tried and true formula music is being released. A band needs to practice, develop original material, tour regionally, attract the interest of a label and then break. It is tried and true and we need to get back to it.... that will save music. Of course retailers need to be realistic about the price of a new CD. There is no way they should be any higher than 6 or 7 bucks, we all know how cheap a blank disc is and we all know how easy it is to duplicate.. You just can't justify $15 dollars for a product... New artists will emerge and sell... they just need to be new sounds from new bands that play their own instruments and play without entering into a competition

True, there is not quite as much good music being put out now, but there is definitely enough to listen to, between new and old music. As long as Good Music still exists, then it really does not matter to me whether or not it is the main stream, or if it sells, or if there are major rock stars, as long as the music is there. Actually it does make me happier for Rock to not be the mainstream. I do like for it to be something that people enjoy for its own sake, not because it is popular.
Rock %26amp; Roll will never die, it will always be around as long as there are people to listen to it, but it may not be the in the main mainstream again, at least for a while, and that is alright with me.
My thought(s?) on this is(are?) that so-called musicians need to stop writing songs for the primary purpose of making sales, and performing songs just to please the audience. This attitude damages (if not totally destroys) any creativity that might have been involved in writing/performing the song. Rock %26amp; Roll is about writing and playing what YOU FEEL, if you are not doing that, you are not playing R%26amp;R. 'Nuff said.

The big corporate record lables have kept the CD prices so high that people are not buying. The radio stations play only what they are sent to play by th big corporate record companies. The big arena's are owned by the big companies who only let the certain "chosen few" tour and play. Its a shame really.. Theres a lot of good music out there that we will not hear. Support local music and indy labels!
wow! I love 80s rock and im only 15..so i saposs there is hope! I think all of the skill in the guitarists have long been faded out. newer bands are all about the singers and i just cant take that! I love hearing guitar solos and new bands dont seem to have such a thing!

wow! I love 80s rock and im only 15..so i saposs there is hope! I think all of the skill in the guitarists have long been faded out. newer bands are all about the singers and i just cant take that! I love hearing guitar solos and new bands dont seem to have such a thing!

the ressurection of John Bonham, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, George Harrison among countless others
it would also take all of the aforementioned and Jimmy Page, Eddie VAn Halen, Slash, and eveyr other rock star EVER to go out and slaughter rappers with their instruments. then people would have to love rock. of course htis wouldn't work, so i dont really know. (wow, what a useless answer. oh well, at least i'll get my two points!)

I just do not understand why RUSH has not yet been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ive always felt that maybe RUSH is just to tallented, too intricate for the mainstream to fully appreciate. The people that vote for it just dont understand much beyond the 3 chord music of today!!!!
The rock and Roll hall of fame is really screwed up. Van Halen just recently got inducted but Michael Jackson has been in it for years. Neil Young is in the RRHOF.RUSH not being yet inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I can't either. I've seen rush 5 or six times. My first time was 1978. Wow that was a long time ago. One of the all time greatest bands. I still don't see what crap, I mean rap has to do with the rock n roll hall of fame. I live in Cleveland and a local radio station WNCX is having their own inductions and I can tell you that rap is NOT on the list. Their has got to be an investigation. It's the ROCK-N ROLL hall of fame jackasses.

Rush is my favorite band forever.
They rock hard, with unmatched precision, optimism, poetic and intelligently crafted lyrics, and with vocabulary that doesn't insult your intelligence time after time.
Simply the Best Band. (and they never even needed a 4th person!)
i just don't understand why people keep petitioning for good bands to gain entry because it will be years before some deserving acts get in...the rock and roll hall is such a sham, the selection process is horrible and reflects a very minimal set of views and not those of the entire rock and roll world

I agree with your picks and all I can say is that for many bands, it seems to take way too long for them to be inducted. Some of the band members or artists don't even live long enough to see it. It took Jeff Beck a long time to get inducted and he was very deserving. Others seem to get inducted too soon for my taste. I would like to see Alice Cooper be inducted - he was the original shock rocker who paved the way for many other theatrical artists. Emerson, Lake and Palmer and King Crimson should be inducted as well.
Edit: I just found an article with people suggesting bands that should have been inducted this year - in response to the Rolling Stone article about new inductees.
